A modified starch product is obtained by reacting a starch component assaying at least 0,5% carboxyl groups with a water-soluble salt of chromium, zirconium or titanium. The starch component is preferably obtained by neutralizing the reaction product of starch and a hypochlorite, although it may be produced by reacting granular starch with an etherifying agent as described in Specification 884,696 and then neutralizing, or by the methods of U.S.A. Specifications 2,654,736, 2,660,577, 2,773,057 and 2,894,945. The starch may be derived from corn, potato, wheat, rice, tapioca or sorghum. Specified salts are chromium trichloride, chromic sulphate, chromic nitrate, chromic acetate, and chromic potassium sulphate; ammonium and alkali metal chromates and dichromates; zirconyl chloride, zirconyl bromide, zirconyl acetate, zirconium oxalate, zirconium tetrachloride, zirconium sulphate, and zirconium ammonium carbonate; titanium tetrachloride and titanium oxalate. The product may be used as a paper coating together with clay, titanium dioxide or calcium carbonate, and a soap derived from stearic, palmitic, lauric, oleic, caproic or myristic acids. |
