Cyclohexene or a methylcyclohexene is obtained from benzene or toluene by contact with an alkali or alkaline earth metal in liquid ammonia and optionally a proton donor in an amount less than equivalent to the metal. The proton donor may be water, an alcohol, or a nitrogen compound, e.g. ammonium chloride, acetate or benzoate, acetamidine, guanidine, urea, sulphamide or acetamide. The methylcyclohexene obtained from toluene is 1-methylcyclohexene-1 or a mixture thereof with 1-methylcyclohexene-3. Temperatures of -40 DEG to 100 DEG C. are used in the examples. |
