Induction furnace is provided with a system that detects local overheating at the induction coil and/or local smelt leakages or penetrations. A metal whose m.pt. is less than that of the smelt is located between the coil and the smelt. The resulting metal pathway is connected at its ends to a device that detects when the pathway is broken.
