The hote plate of a grill or cooker unit is provided in its upper surface with a protective layer (11). This protective layer has a slightly roughened surface and it is made of an enamel which is free of poisonous oxides. The protective layer is preferably made of a single layer of enamel having a high content of iron oxide which produces good adhesion between the enamel and the steel surface of the hot plate whilst providing a non-stick surface for food cooked on it. All edges and corners covered with the enamel layer are preferably rounded to prevent chipping and undue wear.
