Foam-insulated telecommunication cable conductor - is extrusion-coated with polyolefin silane graft copolymer which crosslinks on exposure to dampness

In a telecommunication cable core, the conductor is coated with a (partly) foamed insulating material. The foamed and/or the solid portion of the coating consists of a (co)polyolefin that cross-links under the action of moisture and which has silane (cpds.) grafted onto its backbone. DETAILS Mfr. comprises graft(co)polymerising a (co)polyolefin with silane; granulating the prod.; admixing foaming agent(s); and foam extrusion-coating the conductor. A non-hygroscopic metal oxide, of Sn or Zn, may be incorporated into the (co)polyolefin, pref. after the grafting reaction.
