A process for the preparation of 2,3-dihydro-1H-1,4-benzodiazepine derivatives which are useful as sedatives, anticonvulsants and muscle relaxants, and represented by the formula (I), (I) wherein R is lower alkyl and X is halogen and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, which comprises reducing oxime derivatives of the formula (II), (II) wherein R and X are each as defined above and hydrolyzing the resultants with an acid.
