A new and improved disposable wet tissue is provided with superior character in terms of wet softness, wet strength, wet surface feel, water holding capacity and wet tactile properties as well as desirable bulk and wet resiliency, The wet-laid nonwoven web material consists of a blend of kraft and rayon fibers uniquely combined with hemp fibers and high alpha cellulose pulp. A polyvinyl alcohol resin treatment imparts a water plasticized feel and strength comparable to a synthetic chamois. The resultant web material exhibits the ability to absorb water quite rapidly and to hold a weight of water equal to about 5 or 6 times the dry weight of the nonwoven material yet provides structural integrity permitting its use as a hygienic wet wipe.
