[Also in Division D1] A bleaching packet for use in the bleaching of textiles comprises a dry water-soluble composition which liberates hypochlorite chlorine on contact with water and which contains a detergent enclosed within an envelope of watersoluble polyvinyl alcohol film, the chlorineliberating composition containing sodium and/or potassium dichloroisocyanurate and watersoluble inorganic sodium and/or potassium salts comprising a tripolyphosphate and a carbonate, and if sodium compounds are present the weight ratio of potassium to sodium calculated as elements in the composition being at least 1: 1. Numerous examples of suitable anionic, cationic, nonionic and amphoteric detergents are given. The composition may also contain sodium and/ or potassium sulphates, optical brightening agents, e.g. ultramarine blue, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, citric acid, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylates, starch, urea, perfumes, corrosion inhibitors and colouring matter. The polyvinyl alcohol film is preferably impregnated with a water-soluble alkaline buffer salt, e.g. sodium sulphite, nitrite, formate, hypophosphite, phosphite, metabisulphite, hydrosulphite, thiosulphate, dodecyl benzene sulphinate, toluene sulphinate, acetate, carbonate, bicarbonate, sesquicarbonate, orthosilicate, disilicate, metasilicate, orthophosphate, metaphosphate, tripolyphosphate or pyrophosphate, potassium sulphite, hydrosulphite, acetate, carbonate, bicarbonate, orthophosphate, pyrophosphate, disilicate or tetrasilicate, lithium sulphite, carbonate, bicarbonate or orthophosphate, rubidium sulphite or carbonate or magnesium sulphite. The packets may be sealed in a moisture impermeable container, e.g. metal foil or a metal foil covered paperboard box and/or within a plastic film having a low vapour transmission rate, e.g. polyethylene, laminates of polyethylene, aluminium foil and glassine or waxcoated laminates of metal foil and glassine. |
