The stub pile is formed by driving an open ended tube into the ground. A tubular driving monkey is utilised, sliding inside the tube, having an identical length to the tube, and transmitting driving forces by an external top edge flange. The base of the monkey is sealed by a thick plate to effect displacement of the subsoil. Once the founding strata is reached the monkey is withdrawn, the tube is filled with thin walled tubes to be utilised since the tube resists driving forces due to shaft friction alone. During the initial stages of driving the tube and the monkey may be fixed together, and the tube may be sealed by a thin plate to prevent water ingress.
