<p>The sludge is transfered under pressure into a closed reaction vessel at >160 degrees C (pref. about 180 degrees C). The reactor comprises a vertical, cylindrical pressure vessel with high level inlet for sludge. As the sludge is thickened, it is gently agitated. In the base area of the vessel, thickened sludge is continually displaced radially towards the axis of the vessel, where it is discharged through the base of the vessel. Agitation is pref. effected by long thin rods suspended vertically through the sludge from a supporting, radial arm rotating slowly about the axis of the vessel. Radial displacement of thickened sludge pref carries it into a coaxial sump below the vessel base. The sump are a centrifugal rotor which expels the sludge radially or trangentially. The reactor pref. operates at a pressure of about 10 to 12 bars. Used for thickening and drying sewage sludge ready for disposal, pref. by incineration. The sludge can be economically brough to a solids content of 30% or more compared with about 15% by existing reactors. The process does not allow unpleasant smells to pollute the atmos.</p> |
