19-Nor-Δ4-androstene-3,17-dione(I), useful as a synthetic intermediate of luteinizing hormone, was prepd. by redn. of alkyl or aralkyl ether of estrone acetal (II; R = alkyl, aralkyl, X,Y = o-alkyl, or S-alkyl, III; W,Z = oxygen or sulfur, n = 1-10) followed by hydrolysis. Thus, steroidal compd. contg. I, obtained by hydrolyzing II and III, was treated with Na-NH3 for 5hr at room temp, and was isolated by extn. with NaOH to give I.
