The cavity building block (1) is of insulating material, the voids being filled with in situ concrete to obtain a continuous composite wall, and the block having an outer lining (2) on one or both major faces. The lining may be of terra-cotta or similar and provides a key for plaster finishes. The horizontal section of the lock may include a hollow rectangle with intermediate transverse diaphragm walls (4), the liners having dovetail section ribs (3) embedded in the insulating material. Vertical joints between blocks may be made by dumb bell section toggles (6) of insulating material engaging grooves (5) in each block end.
