PURPOSE:To strengthen the glow discharge of a metallic halide lamp at firing time by connecting an auxiliary resistor of 0.1 to 2.5 KOMEGA to an auxiliary electrode and using penning gas including neon. CONSTITUTION:A quartz light emitting tube 1 incorporating main electrodes 2, 3 and auxiliary electrode 4 contains mercury and metallic halide such as, for example, NaI, TeI, InI, etc. and penning gas of one or more of mixture gas of neon, neon and argon, neon and krypton, and neon and xeron. The electrodes 2, 3 are connected through conductors 8, 9, respectively to a base 10, and electrode 4 is connected through an auxiliary resistor 11 of 0.1 to 2.5 KOMEGA to a conductor 9. At firing time, glow discharge first occurs between the electrodes 2 and 4, and then arc discharge occurs between the electrodes 2 and 3 to control the glow discharge via the resistor 11. |
