The data transfer system comprises a central unit (1), a substation connected in a ring circuit and linked to the main station by two identical channels (4, 5), and between these on each side is a data input unit (8), a databus (9), a tail unit (10) and a telegram receiver and transmitter (TEGEM) (11). In the central channel is a code input (12), with additional input from a process unit (13) which is supplied by a valency tester (14) receiving input from the bus lines on either side. The valency tester is controlled by a synchroniser (15) which is also connected to the TEGEMs (11), and these are in turn linked by an input coupler (16) to the modem (20). The substation has a similar arrangement of units.
