The vessel is externally encased in >=1 lattice-like or netlike arrangement of cables, wires, etc. spaced as closely as possible to one another or in actual contact. The cables may be prestressed. Pref. high-strength wire cables or wire cable networks surround the vessel under tensile stress in one or more layers with the layers in mutual contact with one another. Steels of different ductility and/or strength may be used for the different network layers. Used to prevent splinters and fragments being projected long distances if the vessel should rupture. The system may be applied to new or existing vessels.
