The gantry type scraper discharges material from a stock-pile, having a scraper mechanism working against the pipe face and one a travelling gantry. Rakes on an endless chain gather the material at the foot of the pile and deliver it to one side. The working faces (26') on the working bottom run are inclined from the pile face end (10') to the chain travel direction(S) at an acute angle, at least to a point near the other end of the rake. Alternatively, the entire rake working face can be at an acute angle to the travel direction.
