Liq. polyglycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols are made by first reacting the polyhydric phenol with a molar excess of epichlorhydrin in the presence of a soluble, ionisable halide as condensn. catalyst, at a temp. of 60-130 degrees C. The prod. is diluted with 40-80 wt. % of a water soluble monohydric alcohol or ketone and opt. water, and the mixt. is reacted in one or more stages at 65 degrees C with an aq. soln. of an alkali hydroxide. The amt. of water present is sufficient to hold the alkali halide formed in aq. soln. The aq. alkali halide soln. is then sepd. from the organic phase in one or more stages. The polyglycidyl ether is then sepd. from the resulting organic phase. Prods. have a low viscosity, and a reduced amt. of by-prods. such as polymeric cpds., epichlorhydrin hydrolysis prods., solvent-derived prods., etc. is produced. The process is simple to operate on a batch or continuous basis. |
