Multi-tone effects are obtd. on cationically dyeable textile fibre material or fibre mixts. having different dyestuff affinities, using a cationic dyestuff, opt. an anionic dyestuff and opt. a non-ionic dyestuff, in the presence of at least the reserving agent. This reserving agent is a polymerised quat. ammonium salt contg. the cationic units of formula (I): -circled positive NR1R2-A1-NR3 circled positive R4-CH2-A2-CH2- (I). R1-4 are the same or different opt. substd. alkyl, cycloalkyl or alkenyl with =20C, aryl or aralkyl; or NR1R2 and/or NR3R4 are attached form an opt. substd. 5- or 6-membered heterocycle; A1 = -(CH2)m, where m = 1-20, opt. interrupted by at least one S, CO or CH=CH gp. or substd. by OH, halogen, nitrile, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy, carboxyl or carbalkoxy or opt. at least one substd. aryl or aralkyl gp., polyoxyalkylene, a cyclic gp. e.g. or NA1N and >=1 other substit. forms a heterocyclic structure e.g.: These reserving agents have a mol. wt. of 400 or 500-50000 (up to 25000) esp. 1500-20000 and are water-soluble.
