The mechanism winds strip material into a roll, having one or more pairs of driving rollers (4, 5) running in the same direction. The roll (1) rests on one or both of them in order ti wind in the strip (2) and is accommodated loose and guided inside a trough-shaped housing (3) the walls of which prevent it wandering off the driving rollers. The roll axis (9) and those (6, 7) of the driving rollers form the corners of a triangle. There can be two pairs of driving rollers acting alternately against the roll, which swings to and fro in the housing, at the end of which are automatic alignment devices for the strip edge on the roll.
