The pump comprises an electromagnetically driven piston (3) in a cylinder (1) and means to cause the piston to reciprocate. The cylinder is in an electrically non-conducting and paramagnetic material and is surrounded by the linear stator (5) or coil windings of a linear motor so that the stator field extends along the cylinder jacket and the armature field is induced in the piston. Reversal of the piston may be effected by mechanical switches or via electronic sensors. The stator field may be produced by connection to a single or three-phase mains supply.
