The frame (11) which is to take the glass element (17) comprises four sidepieces (12) each made of one-piece extruded sections welded together at the corners. The pre-fabricated frame can then be shrunk directly or indirectly onto the glass element, e.g. by warming the frame and placing on the glass. Alternatively, the glass element can be cooled to a very low temp. so that it can be inserted in the frame. It is thus only necessary to make a single section of e.g. plastics or light metal, e.g. aluminium which can then be cut to size and the pieces welded together.
