1468053 Phosphate-phosphonate condensates STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 11 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 48687/74 Heading C2P [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises products obtained by condensing (a) at least one phosphate having at least one C 2-4 #-haloalkyl group, with (b) at least one phosphonate R<SP>1</SP>P(O)(OR) 2 where R is C 1-4 alkyl, and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-20 alkyl, C 2-20 alkenyl, or phenyl optionally bearing one or more halo and/or C 1-4 alkyl substituents; the condensation being effected at 110-250‹ C. in the presence of a "nucleophilic catalyst". The products when (a) is a tris-(#-haloalkyl) phosphate and the molar ratio (a) : (b) is 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 have the respective structures (1) and (2) infra. Other obtainable products have the structures (3)-(9) where x is an integer; Q is C 2-4 alkylene; R and R<SP>1</SP> are as above; and R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are esterifying groups. When the products contain cyclic groups of structure these may be opened by reaction with Y(OH) n where n is an integer and Y is H or an organic radical which may contain further functional groups. Any acidic groups in the products may be neutralized by reaction with an epoxide or orthoester. The invention condensates are used as flameretardants for polymers. |
