1,051,685. Electrodepositing nickel. UDYLITE CORPORATION. March 2, 1964 [March 1, 1963(3); Aug.16, 1963], No.8797/64. Addition to 936/72. Heading C7B. Decorative "satin-textured" nickel which may even appear bright is electrodeposited from an acid nickel bath which is capable of producing semi-bright or bright plate and contains also water-insoluble particles of average diameter not more than 5Á which are included in the deposited metal, the particles being of one or more of the following substances: B, Si; boride of Ca, Mg, Ta, Cr, Ti, ZrV; carbide of Cr, V, W, Zr; nitride of Si, Ti, Zr; silicide of Ti, Zr, Ni, Co, Ce; phosphide of Cr, W, Mo, Mn, Ni, Co, Fe, Ce, Ti, Zr, V; oxide or hydrated oxide of Co, Ni, Sn<SP>+++</SP>; phosphate of Pb; oxalate of Th, Pb, Ni, Co, Mn, Sc, Y, rare earth metal or mixed rare earth metal; chromate of Pb, Ba; stannate of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Fe, Co, Ni, Sb, Bi; bath-insoluble Ferrite e.g. of Fe<SP>++</SP>, Co, Ni, Mn<SP>++</SP>, Gd, iron and cobalt; bath-insoluble chromite, e.g. of Fe<SP>++</SP>, Co, Ni, Ba; Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm or mixed rare earth metal e.g. didymium, or an actinide metal oxide, silicate, titanate, zirconate, stannate, phosphate, silicide, sulphide, fluoride, especially an oxide, hydrated oxide, phosphate, oxalate or stannate of Th; Ti or Zr compound containing O and at least one other element, e.g. alkali metal titanium or zirconium silicates; titanates and zirconates of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, Al, Ce, Th, Pb, Sb, Bi, Fe, Co, Ni; mixed aluminates, titanates, and zirconates; any other bath-insoluble compounds of an actinide metal such as sulphides and tetrafluorides of Th, U; fluoborate, fluosilicate or silicate of Th. In specific examples the insoluble particles may also be provided by mixtures of boron or silicon, thorium phosphate magnetic iron oxide (ferrous ferrite) or nickel oxalate with fine silica powder; magnetic iron oxide with lanthanum, neodymium or mixed rare earth oxalate; while reference is also made to the use of a mixture of hydrated stannic oxide and cerium oxide. Sulphur brighteners, formaldehyde, chloral or bromal hydrate, unsaturated linkage compounds (C=O, C=N, C=N, C=C, C#C) e.g. butyne diol, N-heterocylic compounds or mixtures thereof may be included in the bath. The nickel layer may be deposited over one or more semi-bright or bright nickel layers not containing the dispersed particles and may be over-plated with Cr, Rh, Sn-Ni alloy, An or with Ni, bronze, Ag, or brass followed by a thin wax, resin or lacquer layer to decrease tarnishing and finger marking. |
