Polymerisation catalysts are prepared by contacting SiO2, Al2O3 or SiO2-Al2O3 with chromyl chloride either above or mixed with chromyl fluoride and activating the catalyst by heating in the presence of an inert gas, oxgyen or an oxygen-containing gas. In examples, CrO2Cl2 and CrO2F2 are applied to the carrier gaseously or as a solution in nitrobenzene or a halohydrocarbon.
