<p>A 4-stage process for the production of catechol, starting with a mixture of cyclohexanol-cyclohexanone ("KA-oil"), is provided herein whereby the starting mixture is first hydrotreated to convert the cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol, the cyclohexanol dehydrated to form cyclohexene which, in turn, is oxidized to 1,2-epoxy-3-hyaroxy-ayclohexane. Dehydrogenation of this latter compound yields catechol. Volatiles and residue from the second stage are advantageously recycled to the KA-oil feed stream, and H2 from the last stage recycled to the hydrotreatlng step.</p> |
