A method of reducing logs and for producing as a by-product chips of generally predetermined length comprises feeding a log between one or more pairs of cutter members arranged to remove wood particles from opposite sides of the log, the cutter members comprising individual cutters mounted side-by-side and with the teeth of contiguous individual cutters offset from each other. The cutters are arranged to cut into the material to a depth of approximately <SP>1</SP>/ 5 th to <SP>1</SP>/ 20 th of the diameter of the cutters and the rate of feed of the logs is such that the bite of the teeth of the cutters is substantially in the range of <SP>1</SP>/ 8 th to 1 inch. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the log 2, Figs. 1 and 2, is fed by a conveyer 10 between one or more pairs of spaced chipping cutters 11, 12, 13, each of which consists of a plurality of toothed discs 21 mounted on shafts 24 rotated by a belt-drive 28 from a motor 26, the teeth of adjacent discs being offset. A roller 16 on a shaft 17 is yieldablymounted in bearings 18 to press the log against the conveyer. The log, which now has flat sides, is then passed by rollers 14, 15 to a further array of horizontally-mounted chipping cutters to produce a square cant which may have rounded corners. The cant is then sawn into boards, those boards which have rounded edges being reduced to squared shape or particles by being passed between chipping cutters 46, 47, 48, Fig. 6, and under a vertically adjustable chipping cutter 50. In another embodiment, one or both sides of a log is/are formed with a flat vertical face by chipping cutters 71, 72, 73, Fig. 8, rotated about horizontal axes. Specification 989,128 and U.S.A.
