SELECTIVE ORTHOOALKYLATION OF PHENOL

PURPOSE:The selective alkylation of phenols in ortho positions is effected ausing a chromimu oxide-tin oxide catalyst containing a small amount of iron oxide to produce to advantage alkylphenols with at least one of ortho alkyl groups. CONSTITUTION:A phenol with at least one hydrogen in the ortho positions as phenol is brought into contact with an alcohol as methanol in gas phase in the presence of a catalyst containing chromium oxide, tin oxide and iron oxide at 250- 550 deg.C to alkylate selectively the ortho positions of the phenol, thus producing an alkylphenol bearing at least one ortho alkyl group as 2.6-xylenol. The composition of Cr : Sn : Fe in the catalyst is suitably within 100 : 1 : 0.1-100 : 20 : 10.
