PURPOSE:Acrylonitrile containing hydroquinone in an amount of less than a specific one is hydrated in the presence of a catalyst containing copper to control the formation of by-products and produce acrylamide suitable for polymerization. CONSTITUTION:Acrylontrile is brought into contact with activated carbon or distilled to remove hydroquinone and obtain acrylonitrile with a hydroquinone content of less than 5 ppm, perferably less 0.2 ppm. Then the hydration of the resulting acrylonitrile is conducted in the presence of a ctalyst containing copper perpared from copper sulfate and chromium nitrate to produce acrylamide. The amount of water used is several to several ten times the stoichiometric amount of the acrylonitrile. The use of a metal as Cr, Ni, Co, Mo, and so on or their salts along with copper improves the performance of the catalyst. USE:Monomer for polyacrylamide useful as a coagulant. |
