The measurements are in the range of a measuring tape. The device is a portable, pocket size unit. The case holds an ultra or hypersonic sound transmitter and a receiver and a propagation time measuring device, started by the transmitter and stopped by the receiver. A multidigit display unit is allocated to it. The transmitter sends a short pulse, and the receiver has an amplifier stopping the propagation time measuring device. A timer controls the delay after which the receiver reaches its full sensitivity after transmission of the sender pulse.
