Sulfur is burned in oxygen at high temperatures and high pressures without the use of a catalyst. The product gas, i.e., SO3, SO2 and O2, is condensed to separate part of the SO2 and O2 and then distilled to separate the remainder and produce SO3 and/or oleum and sulfuric acid. The SO2 and O2 from the separator (3) and still (4) are recycled to the burner (1). |
