The separation and transport mechanism comprises an elevator with discharge opening, and a hopper connected to the elevator, and with a floor sloping towards the latter. Immediately above the floor is a loading opening dispensing the items loaded in bulk into the hopper, shut by a slide movable vertically. The slide (54) has an opening (58) for the items, and in the open position this is in line with the loading opening (48). When shut it is above the loading opening. On the inside of the hopper wall (50) above the loading opening there can be a deflector plate sloping downwards and inwards.
