A nuclear reactor pressure vessel has a hot internal liner (membrane). In the region between the side wall and top closure the liner to the side wall is connected to a reinforcing ring subjected to the temp. of hot medium; this reinforcing ring is anchored back to an anchoring ring in a cooled location by an upwardly outwardly diverging cone, the slope of which is such as to be aligned with the resultant force from thermal reaction forces in the side wall liner and the reinforcing ring. The anchoring ring is protected from the hot medium by thermal insulation. Pref. the liner to the top closure is connected to a cooled closure ring at its outer periphery; this closure ring constitutes, together with the cooled anchor ring and an annular seal, the seal between the top closure and side wall of the vessel. A simple connection between top closure and side wall is achieved in a relatively shallow overall depth with effective resistance to thermal stresses.
