摘要 966,845. Grinding; work holders. BARNES DRILL CO. July 17, 1963 [July 18, 1962], No. 28313/63. Headings B3B and B3D. A fixture for holding a plurality of workpieces 11, Fig. 4, such as connecting rods which are to have their bores 12 honed, comprises a body 19 having a plurality of laterally opening slots spaced apart longitudinally of the body and overlying each other, each slot being defined in part by a clamping surface 22 facing longitudinally of the body, a plurality of movable members 21, one for each slot, opposed and spaced from the corresponding clamping surface, means supporting the movable members for movement toward and away from the corresponding clamping surface, and mechanism selectively operable to move the members simultaneously toward the surfaces to clamp workpieces received in the slots. The body has two sets of slots each set having clamping surfaces and movable members so that while one set of slots has workpieces therein being honed, the other set is unloaded and loaded with fresh workpieces. The body is mounted on the table 20 of the honing machine, which has a tool on a spindle 15 rotatably carried by a head 16 vertically reciprocatable on guides 17, and consists of a plurality of members 22 provided with clamping surfaces on one side and spaced apart a distance slightly thicker than that of the workpieces by plates 24. The other sides of the members 22 are formed with annular grooves 29, Fig. 7, in which are slidably disposed the movable members in the form of annular pistons 21 which have seals 31 and surfaces 23 for engaging the workpieces when moved by fluid pressure supplied to a manifold 40 from a connection 35 in a trunnion 36 depending into a bore in the body 19 from an arm 50 projecting from the machine. In operation, while workpieces in one set of slots are being honed, other workpieces are placed in the other set of slots and a locator 46 in the form of a cylinder, which co-operates with a stationary piston 51 and is normally disposed below the table 20, is raised by fluid pressure to engage the bores on the workpiece and a bush 49 in the arm 50 to axially align the workpieces. Fluid pressure is then supplied to the connection 35 and manifold 40 to urge the annular pistons into clamping engagement with the workpieces. Thereafter, the locator is withdrawn and fluid pressure is supplied to a motor 65 having a piston rod 66 formed with a rack engaging a pinion 67 on a shaft 63 secured to the body 19 which is thereby rotated to bring the workpieces into alignment with the honing tool of the machine, the fluid pressure to the annular pistons clamping the honed workpieces being disconnected so that the honed workpieces can be removed and replaced with new workpieces. An interlock mechanism 20 prevents rotation of the body when the locator is engaged in the bore of the workpieces. Coolant is supplied through a pipe 73 to an opening 75 connected to a passage 76 and manifold having openings 78 of the set of slots in the honing position.
