1409030 An observation hatch FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 28 Feb 1974 [8 March 1973] 9214/74 Heading F3C An observation hatch has an opening therein, a transparent dome 2, Fig. 1, for covering the opening and an armoured dome 3 for shielding the dome 2. Both domes are mounted for pivotal movements about a common axis 6 and means are provided to effect the opening and closing thereof. In an embodiment the hatch is mounted in the roof 1 of the turret of a military armoured land vehicle and is defined by a raised edge 5 of the roof. The transparent dome 2 is made of synthetic plastics material, may be hemispherical-shaped and has a supporting frame 4 attached thereto which makes a fluidtight connection with the edge 5 when the dome 2 is closed. The armoured dome 3 has its opening movement limited by a stop 8. A latch 10 is provided to releasably fasten the frame 4 to the edge 5 and a latch 9 is provided to releasably fasten the armoured dome 3 to the frame 4 of the transparent dome 2. The latch 9 comprises a slidable bolt 13, Figs. 5 and 6, which is mounted in a guide 14 carried by the frame 4, is urged by a spring 12 and has an inclined face 13a, and a keeper 11 carried by the armoured dome 3. Release of the latch 9 is effected by a handle 17 mounted on a rotatable rod 15 having a transverse finger 16 engageable in a slot in the bolt 13. The latch 10 comprises a support 18, Figs. 7 and 8, which is secured to the frame 4 and carries a two-armed member 19 having a pivot 20 with a catch 21 pivotally mounted thereon and urged by a spring 22 into engagement with the edge 5 of the roof 1. A lever 23 is pivotally mounted on a pivot 24 carried by the roof 1, is urged by a tension-spring 25, and is rotated in a clockwise direction to release the catch 21 and unfasten the transparent dome 2 from the edge 5. The latch 10 may be released externally of the hatch by a handle 28, Fig. 8, which is mounted on a rotatable spindle 26. The latter is supported by the frame 4 and has a finger 27 which is engageable with the catch 21 to release the transparent dome 2 from the hatch. The external operation of the latch 10 can be prevented by a screw 29, Figs. 9 and 10, which is carried by one arm of a bell crank lever 30 mounted on a pivot 31 supported by the member 19 and which blocks the movement of the finger 27 on the spindle 26. The means for opening and closing the armoured dome 3 from inside the hatch comprises a handle 33, Fig. 11, mounted on a rod 32 which passes through the roof 1 and carries a bevel gear 34. The latter meshes with a bevel gear 35 attached to the armoured dome 3. |
