<p>A brake drum 1 for a shoe brake of a motor vehicle has a body 2 of aluminium alloy die-cast around a pre- formed cast iron insert 8, the insert 8 having an inner cylindrical braking surface on a ring 9 integral with a plurality of radial straps 16 integral with a tubular element 10. As shown, the element 10 is within co-axial cylindrical formations 5 and 5' of the body 2. The insert 8 is further secured to the body 2 by bolts 17 threaded in bores 15 extending through the straps 16, these bolts also serving to secure the drum to a road wheel. The element 10 can receive wheel bearings 13, 14, or be arranged to be rotatably driven by a driving shaft. The arrangement is said to assist heat dissipation. <IMAGE></p> |
