Carboxylic acids of the cephalosporin series of the formula: <IMAGE> in which R1 denotes hydroxy(lower)alkylthio or heterocyclic thio which is optionally substituted by lower alkyl or alkanoyloxy(lower)alkyl, R2 denotes lower alkyl, lower alkylthio(lower)alkyl, acyl(lower)alkyl, acylamino(lower)alkyl, lower alkenyl, aryl(lower)alkenyl or lower alkynyl, R3 denotes hydrogen, lower alkyl or aryl and X denotes sulphur or sulphinyl, and their esters, amides and acid anhydrides on the carboxyl group are prepared by reaction of a corresponding 3-azidomethyl- or 3-lower alkanoyloxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid or its corresponding derivatives on the carboxy group with a thiol R1H. The compounds and their salts exert a potent antibacterial action and are suitable for the treatment of infectious diseases in humans and animals.
