In the production of elongate, metallic workpieces (1), such as, for example, spindles, shafts, etc., it is frequently necessary to correct existing alignment errors by a straightening procedure. In order to ensure optimum cost-effectiveness of this straightening procedure, the invention proposes a process in which the straightening error is compared with a desired value, whereupon, in order to establish a straightening displacement ( DELTA h), this value is related to a straightening constant which is already known, is calculated empirically and/or mathematically in dependence on the modulus of elasticity of the workpiece (1) and corresponds to the ratio of the degree of bending remaining with respect to the straightening displacement. The workpiece (1) is then deformed, at the location of the defective alignment, by the mathematically calculated straightening displacement and is subsequently measured for a second time. If deviation from the desired value is still calculated, the straightening constant is corrected by the newly calculated value and the workpiece is once again exposed to a straightening displacement ( DELTA h) corresponding to the new straightening constant. <IMAGE>
