These magnesium-based alloys, exhibiting remarkable mechanical properties, are employed especially in the aerospace industry. In addition to magnesium they contain, in % by weight, from 1.25 to 3.0 % of silver, from 0.5 to 2.2 % of a mixture of rare earths comprising at least 60 % of neodymium, and from 0.2 to 1.9 % of thorium, the total of the respective quantities of the mixture of rare earths and of thorium being between 1.5 and 2.4 % by weight. These alloys may additionally contain one or more of the following elements: zinc, cadmium, lithium, calcium, gallium, indium, thallium, lead, bismuth, copper, zirconium and manganese. A process for the preparation of these alloys consists in heating the constituent elements in solution between 485 DEG C and the solidus temperature, and then quenching and aging the alloys obtained.
