A cell structure suitable for use in a plasma or gas discharge display device comprises a generally tubular shaped sealed member 28 having a hollow portion therein extending longitudinally of said member and containing means 24 providing a plurality of-cells 26 each containing ionizable gas, and electrically conductive elements 30, 32 affixed to said member and suitable for applying electrical potential differences selectively to the gas in said cells, to ionize said gas. The tubular glass member 28 is rectangular in cross-section and the means 24 may be one or more glass blocks (Figs. 2 and 6, not shown) having one or more rows of cells containing neon or nitrogen, or may be a plurality of cylindrical ceramic cores (Fig. 4, not shown) each having a hollow portion defining a cell. The conductors 30 and 32 are transparent to visible light. Alternatively a gas emitting radiation to be sensed by other than the human eye may be employed, in which case the tubular member 28 and conductors 30 and 32 need only be transparent to radiation outside the visible band of frequencies. A display panel of any size or shape is formed by securing a plurality of the cell structures side by side, e.g. by enveloping them in a transparent plastics material. The individual cell structures are tested before assembling the panel, and the unit construction avoids the difficulty of maintaining the length of each cell constant when manufacturing large panels.
