PURPOSE:To accurately discriminate the kind, genuineness, and/or deficient state of paper money by comparing the detected pattern of paper money which is stored in a detected pattern storage means with a reference pattern. CONSTITUTION:A CPU 7 decides whether or not the paper money B is fed slantingly and which of the left and right front ends of the paper money leads if the paper money B is fed slantingly according to detection data on the 1st column of the paper money B detected by an image sensor 2, and further the number of detection data in each column of the paper money B is detected based upon detection data on the paper money B detected by the image sensor 2. Then the detection data stored in a buffer memory 8a are stored in a detection pattern memory 8d according to the decision result so that the pattern is rectangular and the pattern of the stored detection data is compared with the reference pattern. |
