A polyamide is prepared from a composition of (a) 1,4-bis-(b -aminoethyl) cyclohexane and (b) a polymerized fatty acid, or a polyamideforming derivative thereof, having a dimer content greater than 95%, the number of amine and carboxyl groups being substantially equal. The fatty acid may be a saturated or ethylenically or acetylenically mono- or poly-unsaturated linear or branched natural of synthetic monocarboxylic acid having 8-24 carbon atoms. Specified acids include linoleic, oleic and tall oil fatty acids. The acid may be replaced by an ester with a C1- 8 alcohol. The acid polymerization may be effected with the acid of heat and/or a catalyst, the product being fractionated by distillation or solvent extraction to provide a high enough dimer content. The product may be catalytically hydrogenated before or after fractionation to reduce the degree of unsaturation. In the polyamide-forming composition 5-90% of the polymerized acid may be replaced by a compound of formula: (a) R11OCOCOOR,11 (b) R11OCOR1COOR11, (c) NH2(CH2)xCOOR11 or (d) NH(CH2)xCO where R1 is a C1- 20 aliphatic <FORM:1056659/C3/1> hydrocarbon radical, a C6- 20 alicyclic or aliphatically substituted alicyclic hydrocarbon radical or a C6- 20 aromatic or aliphatically substituted aromatic hydrocarbon radical, R11 is H or C1- 8 alkyl, e.g. Me, Et, Pr or Bu and x is 2-15. Specified compounds of these types include sebacic acid. The polyamide condensation mixture may also contain a stabilizer, anti-oxidant, pigment or filler. The condensation temperature may be 150-300 DEG C. |
