1,253,063. Supported organochromium compound polymerization catalyst. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 12 Nov., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967; 27 Feb., 1968], No. 53625/68. Heading C3P. Ethylene is homo- or copolymerized by contacting with a bis-(cyclopentadienyl)-chromium (II) (including ring substituted analogues thereof) absorbed on a porous inorganic oxide support, at a temperature and pressure sufficient to initiate polymerization. The process is most suitably conducted in continuous manner in a fluidized bed reactor including means for recycling unreacted gaseous monomer, with cooling prior to reuse. Conventional solution polymerization techniques may also be employed. Hydrogen is desirably included. The catalysts may be prepared by adding the dried support to a solution of the chromium compound or by direct vapour deposition of the chromium compound on the dried support. In the examples, ethylene is homopolymerized or copolymerized with propylene or ethylidene norbornene (butene also mentioned), in the presence of bis-(cyclopentadienyl) chromium (II) deposited on 5i0 2 , SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 or Si0 2 /Na 2 0 supports using both the solution and fluidized bed techniques. |
