The adjusting mechanism for the footrest on an invalid chair includes a vertical drive shaft (18) with an operating handle (15) at the top which is rotated about the axis of the shaft. This drive is self-locking, and the handle can be locked in a suitable position. This drive shaft operates a slider (49) connected to a lever system (52 etc) to raise the footrest supporting arm (61). The top of this shaft is connected by an extension (25) to the handle, which can slide axially for the locking action. Incorporated with this extension is a locking panel arrangement (29, 31) for securing the handle (15) in its stowed position out of use.
