In an hydraulic turbo coupling having quickemptying valves 18 maintained closed by liquid supplied to the back of the valves by way of the axis of the coupling and control conduits 17 in the impeller, liquid is supplied to the control conduits only from the radially inner part of a bore extending along the coupling axis. As shown the runner shaft has a bore 6 through which passes a tube 11 through which control liquid is supplied to a chamber 16 open to the control conduits 17. The chamber 16 is separated from the bore 6 by a dam 15, and the coupling is filled by liquid supplied through the bore 6 under the control of the valve 10. A valve 14 controls the control liquid supplied through the tube 11. A light cooling circulation of oil may be maintained through the bore 6 and the coupling when the valves 18 are opened to empty the coupling. In a modification the tube 11 is dispensed with, the dam being formed with a central Venturi-like nozzle providing access to the chamber 16. This arrangement may be further modified by providing a tube through the bore 6 to supply a small cooling flow to the coupling when empty, the tube terminating in feed pipes which discharge into the working circuit.
