Cross-linked polyester resins are prepared by reacting a di- or polyhydric alcohol with maleic acid and/or anhydride whilst adding a compound having a single free carboxylic acid group and having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms and copolymerizing the unsaturated polyester so obtained with a vinyl and/or an allyl monomer in the presence of an initiator. The monocarboxylic acid compound appears to react with polyesters present to produce semiesters and polyesters both having molecular weights lower than the initial polyester. Suitable compounds are lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic and ricinoleic acids and phthalic acid monoethyl ester. In examples polyesters are prepared from (1) phthalic anhydride, ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride in the presence of phthalic acid monoethyl ester, styrene is added and the polyester is cured with benzoyl peroxide; (2) maleic anhydride and 1,4-butylene glycol in the presence of stearic acid and curing as in (1). |
