The process concerns redn. of the control power of thermomagnetically switched magneto-optical light modulators, consisting of a magneto-optical storage layer, e.g. of Fe garnet, with isolated magnetic regions, in which the internal magnetisation is aligned using a thermomagnetic agent in an external field. To reverse the magnetisation in one region, only pt. of the region is heated, so that a magnetix domain with the new direction of magnetisation, is produced, which extends over the entire area of the region under the influence of the external magnetic field. A considerable redn. in the switching energy is attained.
