The turning mechanism for an IC engine poppet valve operates on the closed valve via the upper spring carrier (11). That carrier has a multi spline extension, rotationally fixed but axially free to slide, in a tubular extension (8) of the lower carrier (7). The lower spring carrier rests on a ball thrust bearing (6). It is centered by an extension (10) from the upper valve guide (5), which also carries an oil sea (9). A turning motion is imparted to the lower carrier by a ratchet device, suitably timed from the engine.
