beta -Lactam compounds having the formula <CHEM> are described in which R is a carboxyl or esterified carboxyl group and R<1> and R<2>, which may be the same or different, may each represent a hydrogen atom; a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group; or a cyano, formyl, nitro, carboxyl, esterified carboxyl, etherified thiol or a sulphone derivative thereof, acyl, etherified hydroxyl, carbamoyl, substituted carbamoyl, sulphamoyl, substituted sulphamoyl, hydrazinocarbonyl or protected hydrazinocarbonyl group together with, in the case where R is a carboxyl group and/or R<1> and/or R<2> is a carboxyl group, salts thereof. Processes for preparing the compounds and pharmaceutical compositions containing them are also disclosed and intermediates of use in their preparation are described. The compounds are of use as antibiotics or as beta -lactamase inhibitors. |
