The liquid-cooled engine is partic. for motor vehicles and has a cylinder head incorporated in the cooling system and to which an inlet manifold is flanged, being likewise incorporated in the system. Coolant circulation in the head at least is shut off by thermostat below a predetermined temp. Th coolant supply and return in the manifold (3) are formed by passages (12, 13) integral with it and connected directly to the head. To give circulation under gravity, the passages can be at different heights and sloping. There can be a pump on head or manifold, circulating coolant between them at the least while they are shut off from the rest of the cooling system.
