A pressure-loaded gear pump, or motor, comprises a pair of gears 19, 21 (Fig. 2) lodged in a central housing member 11 (Fig. 4) between a pair of wear plates 26, each plate being clamped at its periphery by a circular plate or ring 28 provided with an oval opening containing an axially-movable seal plate 33 (Fig. 3) of similar shape and carrying sealing members 37, 38 in grooves 35, 36 to form pressureloading chambers A, B. Chamber A communicates with the high-pressure side of gears 19, 21 through an oval opening 39 in the associated wear plate whereas chamber B communicates with the low-pressure side through a circular opening 41 in the wear plate, the latter opening being in register with a bore 43 in the adjacent plate 33 which communicates with a passage 44 leading to a chamber 42 at the rear of bearings 24 for the gears whereby leakagefluid can escape to the low-pressure side of the gears. Leakage-fluid in a clearance space between each plate 33 and the associated ring 28 drains into bore 43 through a shallow passage 43<SP>1</SP>. Plates 26 may be of laminated construction comprising a bronze facing bonded to a steel backing. |
